BOSTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- David Ortiz homered and Alfredo Aceves provided a key relief stint for Boston in a 4-0 win that gave the Red Sox a doubleheader sweep over Oakland Saturday.
Ortiz connected for a two-run blast in the second inning to put the Red Sox ahead for good and Jerrod Saltalamacchia delivered the other two RBI as Boston wrapped up a rain-soaked doubleheader as Hurricane Irene approached New England.
The Red Sox won the first game 9-3 and then took the nightcap, which had been moved up from Sunday to avoid the storm. With a total of three rain delays, the twin bill took 11 hours to complete.
Erik Bedard started Game 2, working four-plus shutout innings, but came out after a rain delay. Aceves (9-1) then took over and picked up the victory with three scoreless innings of relief.
Oakland's Graham Godfrey (1-2) absorbed the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over four innings.
