SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Jordan Schafer homered and drove in three runs and J.D. Martinez drove in two runs Thursday in the Houston Astros' 3-1 win over San Francisco.
Astros starter Henry Sosa (1-2) went six innings, allowing one run on four hits, with three walks and three strikeouts, to get his first major league victory. Mark Melancon allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth to earn his 14th save in the opener of a four-game series.
Schafer led off the game with a single and then scored on a double by Martinez. Schafer walked in the third and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Martinez.
Orlando Cabrera drove in a run with third-inning groundout to cut the Astros lead to 2-1 but Schafer got that run back with a solo homer run in the seventh.
Ryan Vogelsong (10-4) started for the Giants, allowing three runs on seven hits, with four walks and four strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings.
The Giants have lost five of their last seven to fall three games behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West.
