MLB: New York Yankees 22, Oakland 9

NEW YORK, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Russell Martin had five hits, including two home runs, Thursday and the New York Yankees had a record three grand slams in a 22-9 pounding of Oakland.

The A's were ahead 7-1 after three innings before Martin hit a solo homer in the fourth. New York's Robinson Cano added a grand slam in the fifth and Martin put the Yankees ahead 10-7 with another grand slam.

New York added six runs in the seventh with a rally fueled by seven walks. Oakland pitchers combined to give up 13 walks in the game.

Curtis Granderson belted New York's third grand slam of the day with an eighth-inning shot. No team had hit three grand slams in one game until Thursday. Andruw Jones chipped in a solo shot right afterward that made the score 22-8.

Martin, who has 17 home runs this season, ended up with six RBI and Cano, who has hit 22 homers, had five. Granderson, who also had five RBI -- giving him 103 for the year -- tied Toronto's Jose Bautista for the major-league lead with 36 home runs. Jones has 10.

Cliff Pennington hit a three-run home run in Oakland's five-run third inning to make the score 7-1. It was his sixth home run.

Yankee starter Phil Hughes lasted just 2 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, while Oakland starter Rich Harden was pulled after 4 1/3, having given up six runs and 10 hits.

New York's Boone Logan (4-2), who struck out all four batters he faced, picked up the win and Fautino De Los Santos (2-1) suffered the loss by giving up Martin's grand slam.
