
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants, seeking to help their injured bullpen, have put in a waiver claim on San Diego closer Heath Bell, ESPN.com reported Wednesday.
The Web site the Giants won the waiver claim for Bell after their own closer, Brian Wilson, was put on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed throwing elbow.
With a successful waiver claim, the Giants have 48 hours to negotiate a trade with San Diego for Bell or the Padres can pull him off waivers and keep him for the rest of the year.
San Francisco is in a pennant race with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League West crown. They came into Wednesday's play trailing the D-backs two games.
"I feel like I'm going to Arizona with the Padres," Bell told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I'm going to do fantasy football on the off day and hang out at the pool and go see a couple of movies and sweat my butt off when I go running in Arizona for Friday's game."
Bell (3-4) has racked up 35 saves and compiled a 2.55 ERA this season, fanning 40 and walking 19 over 53 innings.
