ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Ben Zobrist scored while Sean Rodriguez was beating out a potential force play in the 10th inning Wednesday, giving the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-2 win over Detroit.
Detroit had downed the Rays in their previous six meetings. The AL Central Division-leading Tigers had an overall five-game winning streak snapped.
Zobrist reached on a fielder's choice grounder against Duane Below (0-2) in the 10th and Matt Joyce then swung and missed at strike three for the second out of the inning. Below, however, hit Casey Kotchman with a pitch and walked the pinch-hitting Rodriguez to load the bases.
That brought up Elliot Johnson, who hit a grounder to third baseman Brandon Inge. Ramon Santiago was slow getting to second base to take the throw and Rodriguez got there before the ball arrived, allowing Zobrist to score the game winner.
Evan Longoria hit a solo homer for Tampa Bay in the fourth and Detroit tied it at 2-2 in the seventh on a solo blast by Alex Avila.
Joel Peralta (3-4) got the win by working the top of the 10th after Wade Davis had given up four hits in nine innings.
