MLB: San Diego 7, San Francisco 5

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- RBI singles in the ninth inning by Alberto Gonzalez and Will Venable Tuesday gave the San Diego Padres a 7-5 win over San Francisco.

The Padres had let a four-run lead slip away and the Giants scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score 5-5.

Erik Hamren (1-0) wound up with the win as one of seven pitchers deployed by the Padres. Heath Bell set the Giants down in the ninth for his 35th save.

Ramon Ramirez (2-2) took the loss. He gave up a leadoff double in the ninth to Nick Hundley, who went to third on a bunt and then scored on Gonzalez's single. Gonzalez then scored on Venable's single to right.

Cody Ross, Hector Sanchez and Orlando Cabrera each drove in a run for the Giants, who trail Arizona by two games in the National League West and fell 9 1/2 games behind Atlanta, the leader in the NL wild-card chase.
