PITTSBURGH, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Aaron Thompson and three Pittsburgh relievers combined on a five-hit shutout Wednesday in a 2-0 Pirates' victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

It was only the second time in 12 meetings this year Pittsburgh beat the Brewers.

Thompson, making his major-league debut, lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up four singles while walking two and striking out one. He was replaced by Jason Grilli with a runner on third in the fifth. Grilli got out of the jam with a strikeout and a soft grounder.

Grilli (1-0) went 2 2/3 innings, striking out four, and picked up the win. Jose Veras was used for one inning, striking out one. Joel Hanrahan allowed the fifth hit and walked a batter but finished innings with three consecutive strikeouts for his 32nd save.

Pittsburgh managed just four hits, all off Milwaukee starter Shaun Marcum (11-4), who also walked three and struck out four over six innings.

Jose Tabata opened the Pittsburgh first with a double, took third on a Josh Harrison sacrifice bunt and scored on an Andrew McCutchen sacrifice fly. Harrison doubled in leading off the fourth, went to third on a wild pitch and came in on a sacrifice fly from Neil Walker.
