Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
CHICAGO, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Pitcher Randy Wells drove in what turned out to be the winning run in the second inning Wednesday and the Chicago Cubs held on for a 3-2 decision over Atlanta.
The Braves had a six-game winning streak snapped and the Cubs won for the first time in four outings.
Alfonso Soriano put Chicago in front with a two-run homer in the second off Derek Lowe (8-12). Tony Campana then reached on a fielding error by second baseman Dan Uggla, stole second, went to third on a balk and scored the decisive run on a groundout by Wells.
Wells (5-4) gave up a lone run on two hits over 6 2/3 innings to get the win. Wells allowed a homer to Chipper Jones in the seventh and the Braves added a run on a solo shot from Alex Gonzalez in the eighth off Kerry Wood.
Carlos Marmol hit Uggla with a pitch to open the ninth, but then retired the next three batters for his 30th save.
Marmol joined Lee Smith as the only Chicago relievers to record back-to-back 30-save seasons. Marmol had 38 of them last year.
