WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Daniel Hudson took a shutout into the ninth inning Wednesday and, with relief help from J.J. Putz, brought Arizona a 4-2 win over Washington.
Hudson (13-9) struck out five and scattered seven hits over the first eight innings. He then quickly retired Michael Morse on a groundout to open the ninth and recorded his sixth strikeout of the game when he got Danny Espinosa swinging.
On consecutive pitches, however, Hudson gave up homers to Laynce Nix and Jonny Gomes. That brought Putz into the game and he needed just two pitches to get Wilson Ramos on a foul popup to first base. Putz earned his 32nd save.
Justin Upton scored Arizona's first run in the fourth inning on a fielding error by Gomes in left field and Lyle Overbay singled in a run later in the frame.
It remained a 2-0 game until Miguel Montero delivered a two-run single in the eighth.
All four Arizona runs were charged to Livan Hernandez (7-12), who allowed seven hits over 7 1/3.
