Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

GRAPEVINE, Texas, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Peng Shuai, the top seed at the Texas Tennis Open, withdrew from the tournament with a hip injury but other top seeds advanced in Monday's opening round.
After Peng withdrew, her opening round opponent, Melanie Oudin, was rescheduled to face Akgul Amanmuradova, who was trailing Oudin 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 when she retired.
Second-seed Dominika Cibulkova advanced with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Mirjana Lucic and fifth seed Sabine Lisicki dropped Sania Mirza 6-3, 6-0. Sixth seed Shahar Peer dispatched Anastasiya Yakimova 6-1, 6-3.
Sofia Arvidsson, Elena Baltacha, Angelique Kerber and Kateryna Bondarenko also won first-round matches Monday.
