
HOUSTON, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval belted a two-run homer in the 11th inning Sunday and the Giants posted 6-4 victory over Houston to avoid a sweep.
Cody Ross managed to work a one-out walk off Houston closer Mark Melancon (6-4) in the 11th and one out later Sandoval lined a shot over the center field wall to break a 4-4 tie.
Ramon Ramirez, subbing as closer for the injured Brian Wilson, tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the 11th for his third save of the season as the Giants moved to just 1 1/2 games behind Arizona for first place in the National League West.
Jeremy Affeldt (2-2) earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief.
Brandon Belt hit a three-run homer as the Giants snapped a three-game losing streak.
J.D. Martinez collected three hits and two RBI for Houston, which lost for the first time in five contests.
