
OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Gio Gonzalez pitched eight strong innings and Josh Willigham cracked a two-run, pinch-hit homer Saturday in the Oakland Athletics' 5-1 victory over Toronto.
Gonzalez (10-11) was tough, allowing only one run while scattering four hits, striking out nine and walking one batter. The left-hander broke a personal five-game losing streak with the performance.
Oakland was clinging to a 2-1 lead in the eighth when Ryan Sweeney added an RBI single and Willingham followed with his two-run blast for the A's.
Hideki Matsui added an RBI single as Oakland won for the fourth time in five games.
Toronto's Henderson Alvarez (0-1) was saddled with the loss despite allowing only one earned run on seven hits over six full frames.
Edwin Encarnacion got the only RBI for the Blue Jays.
