Blake, Young advance at Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Americans James Blake and Donald Young began play at the Winston-Salem Open Sunday with first-round victories on the hard courts of Wake Forest University.

Blake dispatched Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 7-5, 6-1, while Young breezed past German Michael Berrer 6-3, 6-4 to advance.

Also logging victories on Sunday's Day 1 were Germany's Tobias Kamke, Russian Igor Andreev and American Ryan Sweeting.

The top seed at Winston-Salem, the final men's tuneup before the U.S. Open, is American star Andy Roddick.
