WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A two-out grand slam homer by Ryan Zimmerman on a 3-2 pitch in the ninth inning Friday gave the Washington Nationals a dramatic 8-4 victory over Philadelphia.
The Phillies owned a 4-2 lead going into the ninth inning of a game that was delayed at the start by rain but the Nationals came back for one of their highlight victories of the season.
Ryan Madson, with 23 saves to his credit, came on in the ninth and promptly gave up three straight singles to Jayson Werth, Danny Espinosa and Jonny Gomes. Those base hits accounted for a run and Wilson Ramos next put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third.
After Jesus Flores was intentionally walked to load the bases, Ian Desmond singled to right to score Espinosa and create a 4-4 tie. Madson (3-2) fanned Rick Ankiel for the second out of the inning, bringing up Zimmerman.
Zimmerman drove the sixth pitch of the at-bat over the wall in left for his ninth homer.
Todd Coffey (4-1) worked the top of the ninth for the win.
Philadelphia scored all its runs in the third to take an early 4-0 lead.
