CHICAGO, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Matt Garza pitched seven shutout innings and Aramis Ramirez belted a two-run homer Saturday in the Chicago Cubs' 3-0 whitewash of St. Louis.
Garza (6-9) worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and then settled down to scatter five hits and two walks while striking out eight in only his second win in 10 starts.
Garza has frequently been victimized by a lack of run support, but Ramirez backed him Saturday with the game's only runs -- a three-run shot in the fourth.
Sean Marshall, Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol (29th save) combined to finish up the shutout.
Edwin Jackson (2-2) absorbed the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits over seven innings, fanning six as the Cardinals lost for the seventh time in 11 contests.
