KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia's three-run homer highlighted a 13-hit assault Friday that gave the Boston Red Sox a 7-1 victory over Kansas City.
Saltalamacchia's home run in the fifth gave Boston a 5-1 advantage. The Red Sox picked up two of their runs on sacrifice flies and another on an error against a struggling Kansas City team that has lost 12 out of 15.
Andrew Miller (5-1) lasted 5 1/3 innings to claim the victory. He gave up three hits and a run before giving way to Alfredo Aceves.
Aceves went the last 3 2/3 innings for his second save.
The injury-stricken Red Sox put Ryan Lavarnway in as designated hitter Friday in his second major league game. He got his first major league hit and scored in front of Saltalamacchia's home run.
Jeff Francis (4-14) gave up five runs on 11 hits in five innings to absorb his third straight loss. He is 1-8 over his last 12 starts.
Boston stayed within a half game of the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East.
