WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Jesus Flores hit his first major league home run in two years Thursday and the Washington Nationals used five pitchers to fight off Cincinnati 3-1.
Flores opened the scoring with a solo shot in the fifth. The Washington catcher saw action in three straight seasons beginning in 2007 but spent all of 2010 in the minors and this was only his 10th game in the majors this year.
Jonny Gomes added a two-run single in the sixth and Washington called on its bullpen to hold onto the lead.
Jordan Zimmerman (8-10) got the win, going 5 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing six hits.
Ryan Mattheus relieved Zimmerman in the sixth with two on and two away and struck out Paul Janish to end the threat.
Henry Rodriguez gave up a run in the seventh, Tyler Clippard worked a perfect eighth and Drew Storen allowed two base runners in the ninth before escaping with his 33rd save.
Bronson Arroyo (7-10) suffered the loss, giving up all three runs on seven hits in six innings. Washington won twice in the three-game series.
