KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A three-run shot by Alex Gordon and a controversial homer from Billy Butler Wednesday helped lift the Kansas City Royals to a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees.

Butler's solo homer, which followed Gordon's blast in the third inning, appeared to bounce off the top of the wall and back into the field of play. After reviewing a video replay for 5 minutes, the umpires allowed the home run ruling to stand -- giving the Royals a 4-2 lead that they held onto to snap a four-game losing streak.

New York, which stayed a game in front of second-place Boston in the American League East, had won three in a row.

Kansas City had a two-run lead heading into the ninth only to have closer Joakim Soria load the bases with one out and give up a sacrifice fly to Robinson Cano. Nick Swisher drew a walk to again load the bases but Jorge Posada struck out to end the game.

Soria, who threw 40 pitches in the ninth inning, earned his 22nd save.

Kansas City starter Bruce Chen (8-5) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings to get the win.

The loss went to Bartolo Colon (8-7), who was touched for five runs on seven hits in five innings. It was his first setback in five starts.
