Wife killed, ex-referee commits suicide

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Former NBA referee Troy Raymond committed suicide in New Orleans shortly after police found his slain wife's body at their Texas home, police say.

CBS Sports reported Wednesday the body of Troy Raymond, 46, was found in a hotel room just hours after the body of his wife Leslie, 41, was discovered at their home in Spring, Texas, Friday afternoon.

Troy Raymond died of a single gunshot to the head and police said a medical examiner had ruled the cause of Leslie Raymond's death was homicide caused by asphyxiation due to manual strangulation, CBS said.

Troy Raymond, who also was a college basketball referee, worked one season in the NBA (2004) before he was found to have lied in his media guide biography.

Constable Tim Holifield of Montgomery County said authorities were not ready to say who was responsible for her death.

"But certainly Mr. Raymond is a person of interest -- and his death brings about more questions than answers," Holifield said.

CBS Sports said its sources said Leslie Raymond had recently asked her husband for a divorce and he had been informed by one coordinator of officials that he would not be re-hired to work games next season.
