ATLANTA, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Matt Cain gave up only an unearned run in eight innings Wednesday and the San Francisco Giants survived a rough ninth inning to down Atlanta 7-5.
Cain (10-9) retired the last 18 men he faced, striking out nine and giving up five hits. He left the game with the Giants owning a 7-1 lead and reduced his ERA over his last six road starts to 0.88.
Atlanta made things interesting in the ninth, scoring four times on three hits against two San Francisco relievers.
Martin Prado's two-out double delivered the third and fourth hits of the inning and brought Brian McCann to the plate as the potential tying run. Jeremy Affeldt struck out McCann on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to end the game.
San Francisco scored four times in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead, getting RBI singles in that inning from Orlando Cabrera and Eli Whiteside.
The Giants had four sacrifice flies in the contest, one of them coming from Cain in the big fourth inning.
Jair Jurrjens, pitching for the first time since Aug. 2 due to a strained right knee, suffered the loss. Jurrjens (12-5) allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings and has not won since July 6.
