DETROIT, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Justin Morneau snapped a ninth-inning tie with a two-run single Wednesday and the Minnesota Twins held on in the bottom half of the inning to edge Detroit 6-5.

Beginning with Jhonny Peralta's solo homer in the bottom of the sixth that gave Detroit a 2-1 lead, the teams combined to score in seven consecutive times at bat.

Rene Tosoni hit a two-run blast in the seventh to give Minnesota a 3-2 advantage, but Detroit came right back to tie it on an RBI single by Miguel Cabrera.

The Twins again went in front in the eighth on a base hit by Jim Thome that drove in Joe Mauer, but the Tigers again tied it in the bottom half of the inning on Wilson Betemit's sacrifice fly.

Minnesota finally took the lead for good on Morneau's bases-loaded, two-out single in the ninth that scored Tosoni and Tsuyoshi Nishioka.

Cabrera brought the Tigers within one in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out single that brought in Brennan Boesch from second. Joe Nathan then got pinch-hitter Ryan Raburn on a pop-up to second and Alex Avila on a strikeout to end the game and earn his 11th save.

Matt Capps (4-6) got the win, allowing only one inherited runner to score after entering the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the eighth.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde (2-4) gave up the ninth-inning runs to take the loss.
