Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

CHICAGO, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Juan Pierre's 14th-inning single carried the Chicago White Sox to an 8-7 win over Cleveland Tuesday and tightened the American League Central race.
The victory left Chicago 3 1/2 games behind division-leading Detroit and a half game behind the second-place Indians.
Pierre had three of Chicago's 22 hits in the 5 hour, 21 minute epic. His opposite-field single scored Gordon Beckham, who had doubled off Chad Durbin (2-2) with one out.
Brent Morel and Paul Konerko both had four hits for Chicago.
Jason Frasor (3-2) pitched the final inning for the win. The Sox used seven pitchers in the game, two of whom had blown saves.
Cleveland was led by Travis Hafner and Jason Donald, who drove in two runs apiece.
