DETROIT, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Jim Thome homered twice, including his 600th career shot, and drove in five runs Monday in the Minnesota Twins' 9-6 victory over Detroit.
Thome's 599th career homer, a two-run clout, came in the sixth inning and gave the Twins a 5-3 lead. No. 600 came an inning later -- a three-run, opposite-field blast off Daniel Schlereth into the Minnesota bullpen that broke the contest open.
The left-handed slugger became the eighth player in Major League baseball history to reach 600 homers, and the first since Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez last season.
Minnesota's Ben Revere drove in two runs, including one on a sixth-inning triple. Revere was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park homer.
Francisco Liriano (8-9) earned the victory despite allowing five runs on nine hits over six innings. Joe Nathan collected his 10th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Delmon Young, traded by the Twins to the Tigers before the game, homered in his first at-bat against his former mates.
Ryan Raburn and Victor Martinez also went deep in the loss.
Rick Porcello (11-8) was roughed up for six runs (four earned) on nine hits over six frames for Detroit.
