SEATTLE, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Ichiro Suzuki and Casper Wells each homered in the first inning Saturday and the Seattle Mariners held on for a 5-4 victory over Boston.

Mike Carp added a two-run single in Seattle's five-run opening inning and catcher Josh Bard tagged out Jacoby Ellsbury at the plate in the third inning despite sustaining a tremendous hit for the M's.
Felix Hernandez (11-10) got the victory despite yielding four Red Sox runs in the sixth inning. He gave up nine hits and two walks, while fanning just two over seven frames.
Jamey Wright tossed a scoreless eighth and Brandon League struck out two in the ninth for his 28th save for Seattle.
Boston's Josh Beckett (9-5) lasted only five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits.
Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia each hit two-run shots in the sixth for the Red Sox, who saw their lead over the New York Yankees shrink to one game in the American League East.
