CLEVELAND, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Minnesota first baseman Justin Morneau, sidelined since early June due to neck and wrist injuries, was returned to the Twins' active roster Friday.
Morneau was recalled from a rehabilitation assignment with Class AAA Rochester and was to be available Friday for the opener of a three-game Twins-Indians series in Cleveland.
The veteran slugger hasn't played for the Twins since June 9 when he injured his left wrist. He also had surgery June 29 to remove a herniated disc fragment from his neck.
Morneau, 30, is hitting .225 with four home runs and 21 runs batted in 55 games this season. He is coming off a 2010 season in which he hit .345 but missed the second half and the playoffs because of a concussion. He was voted the American League Most Valuable Player in 2006 and finished second in that voting in 2008.
The Twins also activated infielder Alexi Casilla from the disabled list.
To make room on the roster for Casilla and Morneau, Minnesota optioned infielder Trevor Plouffe to Rochester and placed outfielder Jason Repko on the 15-day disabled list.
