
NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram scored in his pro debut Friday to highlight a 24-3 exhibition victory for the New Orleans Saints over San Francisco.
Ingram, a star running back with the Alabama Crimson Tide, had six carries and gained 23 yards. He scored on a 14-yard run in the second period to give the Saints a 17-0 lead.
New Orleans opened the scoring with a 47-yard field goal from Garrett Hartley and got a 78-yard punt return from Joe Morgan in the first minute of the second period.
Drew Brees played three series for the Saints but he threw only four passes. Chase Daniel got most of the work for New Orleans, completing 13-of-21 for 129 yards.
Alex Smith was 2-of-7 for just 10 yards for the 49ers, whose only score came on a 59-yard field goal by David Akers on the final play of the first half.
