TORONTO, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Ervin Santana took a shutout into the ninth inning Friday and threw his fourth complete game of the year to bring the Los Angeles Angels a 5-1 win over Toronto.
Santana (9-8) won his fifth straight start, allowing only a ninth-inning run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
His four complete games in 2011 equal his career best, established last year. He has gone the distance 13 times in his seven years with the Angels.
Los Angeles snapped a two-game skid in the series opener, getting a solo homer from Vernon Wells in the second and a two-run double from Torii Hunter during a three-run third.
Brandon Morrow (8-7) allowed four runs on just four hits over seven innings to take the loss. The only Toronto run came on a one-out homer in the ninth by Eric Thames.
Santana needed just 102 pitches to go the full nine innings.
