CINCINNATI, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Jay Bruce hit a clutch three-run homer in the eighth inning Friday that rallied the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-3 victory over San Diego.
Bruce had four RBI overall as part of Cincinnati's third straight victory. The Padres had won their previous two games.
An RBI single by Logan Forsythe in the top of the eighth gave San Diego a 3-2 lead but Bruce came through with his big two-out blast in the bottom half of the inning off Josh Spence (0-1).
Spence suffered his first major-league loss in his 25th relief appearance of the season.
Ramon Hernandez reached on a one-out walk in the eighth and gave way to pinch-runner Brandon Phillips. Edgar Renteria's groundout moved Phillips to second and slugger Joey Votto was intentionally walked.
That brought up Bruce, who homered to right on an 0-1 pitch. It was his 24th home run of the season.
Bruce also drove in a run with a double in the fourth.
Bill Bray (3-2) recorded the final out in the eighth to get the win. Francisco Cordero was perfect in the ninth for his 23rd save.
