
NEW YORK, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Will Venable had four hits and three runs scored in boosting San Diego to an early lead Wednesday and the Padres fought off the New York Mets 9-5.
The Mets, who rallied late to win the two previous games against San Diego, brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before Heath Bell finally got Willie Harris on a liner to second.
San Diego built a 5-0 lead through three innings, with Venable contributing an RBI single during a two-run second.
Jesus Guzman went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run for the Padres. Guzman stole home as part of a double steal during a three-run ninth that boosted the San Diego lead to 9-4.
Aaron Harang (11-3) worked in and out of trouble to get the win, giving up three runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
R.A. Dickey (5-11) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in six innings.
