MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Jim Thome doubled home the go-ahead run during a three-run eighth Wednesday, boosting the Minnesota Twins to a 5-2 decision over Boston.
The Red Sox had a four-game winning streak snapped, falling to a team that had lost six in a row.
David Ortiz hit a home run in the eighth to lift the Red Sox into a tie but Minnesota struck back in the bottom half of the inning.
Joe Mauer drew a walk off Jon Lester (11-6) to open the inning and scored one out later on Thome's double to left. After Alfredo Aceves relieved Lester, Danny Valencia doubled home pinch-runner Jason Repko.
Valencia eventually scored on a single by Tsuyoshi Nishioka.
The win went to Glen Perkins (4-2), who worked 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Boston's lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East was trimmed to 1 1/2 games.
