NEW YORK, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Bobby Abreu hit two homers, including a decisive two-run shot in the ninth, powering the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-4 win over the New York Yankees Tuesday.
Abreu's second blast of the game came off New York closer Mariano Rivera (1-2) with Erick Aybar aboard and handed the Angels a victory in the opener of their three-game series.
Aybar got a leadoff single off Rivera, who then retired the next two batters before Abreu (three RBI) clouted a 3-1 pitch into the right-field seats to break a 4-4 tie.
Jordan Walden earned his 26th save in the bottom of the ninth -- aided when Curtis Granderson was caught in a rundown while trying to steal second for the final out of the game.
Scott Downs (6-2) was credited with the win after tossing a scoreless eighth.
Granderson homered and Derek Jeter stroked a two-run single for the Yankees.
