Phils' Victorino suspended for brawl

NEW YORK, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino was suspended three games and fined Monday after sparking a benches-clearing brawl against San Francisco.

Victorino has opted to appeal the suspension. As a result, he was set to appear in Monday's Phillies contest against the Dodgers.

Major League Baseball, which announced the decision Monday, declined to suspend any of the other players involved in the incident, including Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco, Giants pitcher Ramon Ramirez and Giants catcher Eli Whiteside.

They were merely fined an undisclosed amount.

Victorino was batting in the sixth inning of Friday's game when Ramirez hit him with a pitch. He moved toward the mound and Ramirez tossed his glove down.

Whiteside jumped in front of Victorino, then grabbed Polanco by the legs as Polanco was rushing in from first base.

Victorino at one point was being held back by home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski.
