Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Brandon McCarthy hurled eight shutout innings Saturday and the Oakland Athletics posted an 8-0 whitewash of Tampa Bay.
McCarthy (5-5) allowed five hits, didn't issue a walk none and struck out five, recording a victory in his third straight start.
David DeJesus hit two bases-empty homers, and Coco Crisp chipped in two hits and stole four bases as the A's took the middle contest of a three-game series while snapping a four-game losing streak.
Tampa Bay's Alex Cobb (3-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits before being yanked after 4 1/3 innings.
Robinson Chirinos went 2-for-3 with a double for the Rays.
