ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Dan Haren took a shutout into the eighth inning Thursday and Mark Trumbo hit a three-run homer in carrying the Los Angeles Angels past Minnesota 7-1.
Haren (12-6) allowed only one hit through seven innings but gave up a homer to Jim Thome in the eighth and the Twins came up with two more hits in the frame. Haren worked his way out of further trouble but gave way to Scott Downs in the ninth and missed out on what would have been his fourth complete game of the year.
The Angels did all their scoring in the first five innings, getting an RBI double from Peter Bourjos and a run-scoring single from Jeff Mathis in the second.
Trumbo hit his homer in the third, giving him 21 for the season, and he drove in another run in the fifth with an infield single.
Francisco Liriano (7-9) gave up seven runs on 10 hits over five innings to take the loss.
