NASHVILLE, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Nashville Predators defenseman and team captain Shea Weber Wednesday was awarded a one-year, $7.5 million contract through arbitration.
An independent arbiter made the award after the two sides were unable to reach an agreement prior to a Tuesday morning deadline.
Under the NHL process Weber told the arbiter he wanted a one-year rather than two-year deal, while the Predators gave up their rights to walk away from the ruling by electing to go to arbitration.
Weber netted 16 goals and a handed out a career-high 32 assists while appearing in all 82 games for the Predators last year. The captain captain guided Nashville to its first-ever playoff series victory -- a six-game win over Anaheim.
The Predators fell to Vancouver in the semifinal round.
Weber has totaled 80 goals and 134 assists over 402 career NHL games.
