DETROIT, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Brian Boesch smacked a tie-breaking solo homer in the eighth inning for Detroit Tuesday, salvaging a 6-5 victory for the Tigers over Texas.
The Tigers had forged a three-run lead after Alex Avila (solo homer, three RBI) stroked a two-run single in the fifth inning to make it 5-2.
The Rangers rallied to even it up in the eighth, thanks to a bases-empty shot by Nelson Cruz and a two-run blast by Mike Napoli off Joaquin Benoit (3-3), who got the win after Boesch rescued the Tigers with one out in the eighth -- blasting a 1-2 pitch from Mike Adams (0-1) through a driving rain and into the right field stands.
Detroit starter Max Scherzer held the Rangers to two runs on six hits over six innings.
Colby Lewis went four innings and surrendered five runs for Texas, which came into the game with a two-game lead over the second-place Los Angeles Angels in the American League West.
