Franklin wins backstroke at USA meet

STANFORD, Calif., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Missy Franklin backed up her outstanding world championship showing with a victory in the 100-meter backstroke Wednesday at the USA National Championships.

Franklin, 16, expected to be one of the top American stars at next year's Olympics, won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze last week in China during the world meet.

She captured the 200-meter backstroke in China by a full second over Australia's Belinda Hocking and she won the 100-meter American title Wednesday in the time of 59.18.

Franklin won a gold medal at the world championships in the 400-meter medley relay, captured a silver in the 400-meter freestyle relay and claimed a bronze in the 50-meter backstroke.

Matt Grevers won the men's 100-meter backstroke Wednesday in 53.14. He won a silver in the event at the 2008 Olympics.

Other winners Wednesday included Peter Vanderkaay in the 200-meter freestyle (1:46.45), Allison Schmitt in the women's 200-meter freestyle (1:57.94) and Bobby Bollier in the men's 200-meter butterfly (1:56.94).
