NEW YORK, N.J., July 31 (UPI) -- The New York Jets have agreed to take on ex-Giants and ex-con wide receiver Plaxico Burress, the team said Sunday.

The Jets told USA Today they had reached an agreement in principle with Burress, who spent 20 months in prison for bringing a gun into a New York night club that accidentally went off and struck him in the leg in 2008.

Burress had talked to the Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers about resuming his career this weekend but went with the Jets instead.

The New York Daily News said the Jets offered him a 1-year deal for $3 million. The newspaper said the Jets went after Burress after their No. 2 receiver, Braylon Edwards, opted not to return to the team. Burress joins a passing attack that includes quarterback Mark Sanchez and receiver Santonio Holmes.
