FRISCO, Texas, July 31 (UPI) -- Martin Chavez scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute Sunday and FC Dallas moved closer to first place with a 1-0 win over Chivas USA.

Chavez fired a shot off a pass from Ruben Luna that was deflected past Chivas goaltender Dan Kennedy and Dallas (12-5-6) moved within three points of the top spot in the Western Conference.

George John nearly made it 2-0 with a 40th-minute header and Chavez had a second goal waved off in the 59th minute after being ruled offside.

Chivas fell to 6-8-8.
