BUDAPEST, Hungary, July 30 (UPI) -- Defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel won the pole position Saturday for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Vettel's Red Bull car covered the 4.38-kilometer (2.72-mile) course at Budapest in 1 minute, 19.815 seconds to edge Lewis Hamilton for the premier slot in Sunday's race by 0.163 seconds.

Hamilton had the fastest practice time Friday. Vettel was the fifth-fastest, but he has finished no worse than fourth in nine grand prix this season.

"Hamilton and (Jenson) Button were a bit quicker than us on Friday, so it seems we have done the right thing," Vettel said. "I was much more comfortable this morning."

Button will start in the third position Sunday.
