PALO ALTO, Calif., July 30 (UPI) -- Serena Williams produced an easier-than-expected win over Maria Sharapova Friday to reach the semifinals of the Bank of the West Classic.
Williams, playing in only her third tournament of the year after spending much of the season recovering from illness, defeated Sharapova 6-1, 6-3.
While Williams was away from the game, Sharapova was putting together two tournament titles plus a semifinal appearance at the French Open and a runner-up finish at Wimbledon.
Williams had to go three sets in winning her second-round match over Maria Kirilenko this week, so a difficult challenge was expected in her meeting with Sharapova.
Instead, Williams breezed into a semifinal match against Sabine Lisicki, who defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2.
In the other quarterfinals Dominika Cibulkova eliminated Marina Erakovic 6-1, 6-1 and Marion Bartoli won over Ayumi Morita when Morita retired to start the second set.
