OAKLAND, Calif., July 30 (UPI) -- A double-play grounder by Michael Cuddyer brought in the go-ahead run Friday and he added a three-run homer in pacing the Minnesota Twins past Oakland 9-5.
Trevor Plouffe and Jason Kubel drove in two runs each for the Twins, who inched in front during the middle innings and then broke things open with a four-run eighth.
Plouffe scored on the double play off Cuddyer's bat to put the Twins in front for good in the third.
After Plouffe singled in a run in the eighth, Cuddyer launched his home run that gave Minnesota a 9-2 lead. That allowed the Twins plenty of room to withstand a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth by Josh Willingham.
Nelson Liriano (7-8) lasted seven innings to get the win. He gave up two runs on six hits and struck out four.
Gio Gonzalez (9-8) allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.
