DETROIT, July 29 (UPI) -- Victor Martinez and Carlos Guillen had four RBI each Friday and keyed two big innings that led the Detroit Tigers to a 12-2 whipping of the Los Angeles Angels.
The Tigers scored four times in both the sixth and eighth innings, with Martinez and Guillen combining to drive in six of those eight runs.
Rick Purcell (11-6) allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings to finish the month of July with a 5-0 record. He struck out six and did not walk a batter while helping end a three-game Los Angeles winning streak.
The Tigers had only a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth but Martinez singled in a run in that inning and scored along with Brennan Boesch on a triple by Guillen.
Both Martinez and Guillen had an RBI double in the seventh and they came through again in the four-run eighth -- Martinez driving in two with a single and Guillen delivering a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Chatwood (6-7) took the loss, surrendering six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
