De Jonge, Simpson share Greenbrier lead

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va., July 29 (UPI) -- Brendon de Jonge and Webb Simpson shared the lead Friday and Phil Mickelson found himself out of the tournament midway through the Greenbrier Classic.

De Jonge has often threatened in PGA Tour events, but has never won in almost three full years on the circuit. He shot a 3-under 67 at the Greenbrier Resort's Old White TPC course while Simpson had a 68.

They were tied at 7-under 133 at the 36-hole mark, one shot in front of first-round leader and former Masters champion Trevor Immelman.

Those tied for fourth at 135 included Michael Letzig, Scott Stallings, Gary Woodland, Brian Davis and Derek Lamely.

Simpson is also winless on the tour and Immelman has not had a victory since his triumph at the Augusta National Golf Club three years ago.

Mickelson shot a 3-over 73 and, at 143, missed the cut by two shots. He tied for second two weeks ago at the British Open. Mickelson had not missed a cut since The Barclays during last year's FedEx Cup playoffs.

Defending champion Stuart Appleby also missed the cut at 143. John Daly, who wound up ninth last week at the Canadian Open for what was easily his best finish of the year, will also miss the weekend's action after shooting a 75 for a 145 total.
