"I got off to a great start this season, it's true," he said. "I was putting better then than I have for the last couple months and I'm not really sure why."

Mark O'Meara and Michael Allen were tied for second with rounds of 66 at the Inverness Club, which has hosted four U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships.

Those at 67 included Steve Jones, Mark Wiebe and Damon Green, a former caddy for Zach Johnson on the regular tour who is making his third start on the Champions circuit. Mark Calcavecchia, who had at least a share of lead for each of the first three rounds of last week's Senior British Open, had a 68.

Russ Cochran, the winner last week in a duel with Calcavecchia, was among those at 70. Defending champion Bernhard Langer, still recovering from a thumb injury suffered this year, also had a 70.
