
LOS ANGELES, July 28 (UPI) -- Juan Martin del Potro, in search of his third tournament title of the year, downed James Blake Wednesday in the second round of the Farmers Classic.
The second-seeded del Potro set up a quarterfinal meeting with Ernests Gulbis by defeating Blake 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). The most recent championship for del Potro came in Portugal prior to the French Open when he defeated Fernando Verdasco in the title match.
Gulbis reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Daniel Kosakowski.
In the other second-round matches, Yen-Hsun Lu surprised third-seeded Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 6-4 and Ryan Harrison was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Michael Russell.
Top-seeded Mardy Fish, trying for his second tournament win in as many appearances, will meet Gilles Muller Thursday in the second round.
