NEW YORK, July 27 (UPI) -- The New York Mets have reached an agreement in principle to send outfielder Carlos Beltran to San Francisco, multiple reports indicated Wednesday.
The Mets will receive hard-throwing, right-handed pitching prospect Zack Wheeler from the Giants in exchange for Beltran, an all-star who has collected 15 homers and 66 RBI with a .289 average in 61 games for New York this season, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.
Beltran reaches the end of his 6 1/2-year deal with the Mets at the conclusion of the season.
Under the terms of the trade, New York will pay two-thirds of the $6 million still owed to Beltran, the New York Post reported.
Wheeler was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Giants. He will join a Mets minor league pitching scene that also includes Matt Harvey, the team's first-round pick in 2010, The Star-Ledger said.
