CLEVELAND, July 27 (UPI) -- New York Jets free agent receiver Braylon Edwards avoided jail time Wednesday after being found in violation of his parole on a 2009 Cleveland incident.

Edwards was on probation from his 2009 arrest outside a Cleveland nightclub when he pleaded guilty last week to a DWI charge in New York, issued to him last year after being pulled over on Manhattan's West Side.

His guilty plea on the DWI count triggered a probation violation hearing before Cleveland Municipal Judge Michelle Denise Earley, who chose to extend Edwards' probation rather than jail him, the New York Daily News reported.

The receiver was arrested outside a nightclub in the city in January 2010 after allegedly punching a friend of former Cleveland Cavaliers basketball star LeBron James, the newspaper said.

Edwards had pleaded no contest to those charges.
