Gulbis ousts No. 5 seed at Farmers Classic

LOS ANGELES, July 27 (UPI) -- Ernest Gulbis of Latvia upset No. 5 seed Xavier Malisse 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) Tuesday in a first-round match at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles.

Gulbis served up 13 aces and ended a five-match losing streak dating back to May, and will next face American qualifier Daniel Kosakowski.

Eighth-seeded Igor Kunitsyn of Russia also advanced to the second round, knocking off Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-4, 6-3. Kunitsyn broke Gonzalez's serve three times and saved all five break points.
