EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., July 27 (UPI) -- New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin was given a one-year contract extension Wednesday, making his current deal active through the 2012 season.

Coughlin, 64, a native of Waterloo, N.Y., was in the final year of a four-year contract signed in March 2008. It would have expired after the 2011 season.

Financial aspects of the new agreement weren't released.

Last season was Coughlin's seventh with the Giants since he took over from Jim Fassel after the 2003 season. They finished 10-6 and tied for the NFC East title but didn't qualify for the playoffs. He has a 65-47 record at New York. The Giants won Super Bowl XLII while he was coach.

"As I was when I was hired in 2004, I am grateful for the opportunity," Coughlin said. "To be the head coach of the Giants is the fulfillment of a dream for somebody who grew up where I grew up.

"As I have said roughly a thousand times, we're all on one-year contracts in this business, but the reality is that I am thankful to work for the (owners) and (General Manager) Jerry Reese and his staff, as well as my coaching staff and our players."

Coughlin previously coached the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-2002, building a 68-60 record.
